Book Recommendations

When my son was diagnosed with Asperger Syndrome I immediately went about educating myself what it was and how to help him. Amazon was my best friend during this pursuit of understanding Asperger Syndrome and obtaining intervention strategies on everything from behavior to social skills. Our local city library had only a few books about the subject and they were always checked out so I bought several books, but here are my favorites that I could not live without:

Asperger's Syndrome: A Guide for Parents and Professionals by Tony Attwood- The guru of Asperger Syndrome explains all about AS: Diagnosis, Social Behavior, Language, Interests and Routine, Motor Clumsiness, Cognition, and Sensory Sensitivity. There is even a section of Frequently Asked Questions.

Asperger Syndrome and Adolescence: Practical Solutions for School Success by Brenda Smith Myles and Diane Adreon- A must have for any parent of a child with Asperger Syndrome. Fantastic suggestions and ideas to add to your child's IEP. The book consists of : Middle & High School Experiences for the Neurotypical Adolescent, AS: Characteristics Impacting the Middle and High School Years, Assessment of Adolescents with Asperger Syndrome, Supports for Students with Asperger Syndrome, Transition Planning and Academic Modifications for the Student with AS, and Perspectives from Adolescents with AS and Their Parents. This book is well written and easy to understand and can be used with younger students as well.

Asperger Syndrome and Difficult Moments: Practical Solutions for Tantrums, Rage, and Meltdowns by Brenda Smith Myles- If your AS child exhibits any problems with behavior, this book helps parents with strategies and ideas to help their child. To effectively carry out individualized interventions with children with AS, we must first analyze the behaviors that precede situations, as well as those that happen during and after. Instead of random hit or miss efforts, this book explains the tools that parents and educators can use to pinpoint bad behavior and their causes and how to develop and implementing a Behavior Intervention Plan that promotes proper behavior.

Wrightslaw: From Emotions to Advocacy - The Special Education Survival Guide by Pam and Pete Wright- This book educates and informs parents all about special education. It is an invaluable tool for parents who have special education children in the school system who need a good reference. The book consists of: Learning About Advocacy, Creating Your Master Plan, The Parent as Project Manager, Learning the Rules of the Game, Obstacles to Success, Resolving Parent-School Conflict, Evaluations and Your Child's Disability, The File- Do It Right!, Tests and Measurements, Smart IEPs, Special Education Law, and Tactics & Strategies. This book is a must have for any parents seeking special education for their child and advocacy. I advise parents to read this, learn it, and KNOW it! It sure helped me with straightening out the school system and keeping my sanity.

How Well Does Your IEP Measure Up? by Diane Twachtman Cullen- This book tells all about IEPs, what they should consist of, and how to write them correctly. There are also tons of goals and objectives that you can put in the IEP listed in the back of the book. A must to have!

These all sound wonderful! I have started reading Tony Attwood's book and am already finding it helpful. We are just reaching a point where "Asperger" books seem applicable.

I love Wrightslaw and all they do, but I'll have to check out the other IEP book. Thanks for a great list. :)

Thanks for visiting my blog the other day. I am so pleased to meet another book-addict! Ditto all your choices, and may I be so bold as to add one more: Freaks, Geeks, and Asperger Syndrome by Luke Jackson, a 13-year-old who made me understand AS from the inside.
