File to Give Teachers For AS Training

I have in my son's IEP that a training session is to be conducted before school starts including all teachers, aides, counselors, administrators, bus drivers, etc., who will have contact with him.

When conducting a training session for all personnel about your child, be sure to make it brief and informative. Do not waste their time with repetitive explanations that seem to go on and on. Teachers and staff want just the facts with interventions and strategies on how to best teach your child.

I give each person a file (one of those folders with brass fasteners that hold papers inside) that I have done and I go over it during the meeting. In the file is:

1. Poem: The Misunderstood Child by Kathy Winters

2. Info on your child with color picture. In the report it includes:
- description of AS
- educational impact of the disability
- accommodations and modifications present to assist my son
- behavioral interventions used
- assistive technology
- related services provided to my son
- list of last year teachers and what they taught
- important tips from past teachers
- parent contact info (cell/phone number, e-mail address, etc.)

Example of Student Info Report

3. Copy of Accommodations and Modifications list in the IEP.

4. Short 1 page info on:
- 10 traits _____ struggles with:
- _____ strengths:
- _____‘s special interests:
- What school is like to _____
- When behavior difficulties do occur, they typically appear to be a function of:

5. Copy of Report card

6. How To Keep An AS Student On Task

*I usually conduct the whole meeting so it WILL be done. Otherwise, even if the training session is specified in the IEP it sometimes is over looked. I call the school before school starts to find out when I can do the training session, invite all who will be in contact with my son, and bring goodies to the meeting. :)

By the way, the teachers love my Rum Cake and brownies. LOL!
