Common problems that arise during IEPs

Everyone has IEP problems so I would like to share some tips that have helped us with this grueling and highly frustrating process that might be beneficial to you some day.

Common problems that arise during IEPs

Parents always want what is best for their child. When developing an IEP parents must take an active part and advocate for their child. That is the BEST thing that they can do for their child. By educating themselves about the IEP process and your rights, you become part of the IEP process.

Rule number 1: Be positive and open minded. Remember that you have to work with these professionals to get what your child needs.

Rule number 2: Do not be demanding and inflexible. No one likes working with anyone that will not cooperate.

Rule number 3: Do not lose your temper. Be calm when problems arise. As soon as tempers fly, so does your opportunity to get what your child needs.

Rule number 4: When problems arise always back up your concerns with data (teacher and parent observations, report cards, tests, books and papers, doctor suggestions, teacher and parent notes to each other, child’s classroom and homework papers, etc.).

Rule number 5: When developing an IEP for your child, have it collaboration between you and the IEP team. Ask the IEP Team their opinions or suggestions. You might be surprised with what they come up with.

Rule number 6: Be realistic with the goals and objectives that your child can achieve within a year.
