Dealing With The School

We all have had our share of problems when dealing with our child’s school. At times it seems like the school enjoys playing games with us by ignoring the problems as well as ignoring the parents that request that something be done for their child. This never ending cycle is frustrating and quite tiresome. It’s no wonder that parents can and do lash out because their child is not receiving what they desperately need.

Things are going well for MONK in school now, but that was not always the case. Back when MONK was in elementary school his 4th and 5th grade classroom teachers would not follow through consistently with his accommodations and modifications as well as the recommended behavioral procedures that were stated in his IEP. As a result my son did not make any improvements academically (still made C’s and D’s on his report card) or behaviorally. Since the teachers refused to comply with his IEP, MONK would have meltdowns during school (temper tantrums, yelling, rolling on the floor, rage, shutdown, etc.). To make matters even worse, the 5th grade classroom teacher and P.E. teacher never even notified us of any behavioral problems that MONK was having in school. Fortunately our problems were generally eliminated when my son went to middle school because they followed through on his IEP. We were lucky.

So what was your worst problem you had when dealing with your child’s school? How did you fix the problem?
