When my son was young, school was extremely overwhelming due to all the sensory input that bombarded him from the moment he arrived. This total lack of control of the environment usually resulted in behavior problems and poor grades. The best way to describe what he experienced at school is try having a pinecone inside the back of your shirt, flick the light switch on and off continuously, and have a tape recorder with a rhythmic repetitive sound, interrupted occasionally by a loud bang. Do this all at the same time while doing a challenging class assignment when you have poor fine motor skills. This is on top of also having social and communication deficits with combination of other problems including poor attention.

To filter out these loud noises that he found overwhelming he wore ear plugs (Howard Leight Max-1 pre-shaped foam ear plugs). It seemed to do the trick and wasn’t obtrusive. You can get them in various colors and you used to be able to find them at Target. You can also find them online and buy them in bulk.
Hubby works around various aircraft at times (he works for the Navy as an engineer, but he is not military), and he wears ear plugs so our son has seen this. I think this had a lot to do with MONK trying it. :)
Maybe showing your kids pictures of people at various jobs wearing ear plugs might help? We also wear ear phones and plugs to do yard work and some of the neighbors do it as well. :)
NOTE: MONK did not put the ear plugs completely into his ear canal. He only wanted to filter the loud noises out. (I hope this makes sense how he did it.)

What a great idea! Daniel has headphones and usually is fine with them when he needs them, but I'll keep these in mind. Sometimes I feel that he doesn't want to wear them because they're so big and obvious. I guess it's a good sign that he cares?? Great tip!! :)
We give some of our students "noise reducing headphones" like the type that construction workers wear. But these seem like they would be much more comfortable (if you can stand things in your ears)
How old was he? My twins are sensitive to noise also, although they have learned to cope pretty well at school. They have the option of "sensory breaks" to go to the much-quieter special needs classroom when needed, so that helps. Where it has been more of an issue is church - microphone noise, loud singing, organ music, etc. Unfortunately they refused to put anything in their ears and when we tried headphones it helped them but it was a big distraction for the other kids who wanted to see their headphones. We're going through similar issues w/ Little Bitty now, I wonder if he'd be willing to wear ear plugs?

As I always say, whatever works with these kids, do it! :)
