Sex Education for Special Needs

Some consider sex education a taboo subject, but studies show that students (even special needs students) need to be informed about sex because it is vital to know and understand in today’s society. It is also proven that sex education should be an ongoing process and not a one time lecture.

Whether sex education is taught at school and/or at home it must be part of your child’s curriculum if they are to be able to survive. We must also consider their safety and sex education may save their life. Statistics show that children with developmental disabilities are 4-10 times more likely to be victims of sexual abuse and rates of STDs are high among young adults with disabilities. It is critical that children and teens with disabilities learn appropriate sexual behaviors. They must be taught to say no, how to protect themselves, and what to do if they are sexually abused, etc.
