Dorm Room Supplies on a Budget

You have your dorm room assignment. Now, what do you do? Moving into a dorm room is overwhelming especially when you are on a budget. So what can you do to save money?

The How To’s In Having The BEST Dorm Room on a Budget

1. First, make a budget. Figure out how much you want to spend.

2. Make a list of what you really need and keep it with you while shopping. Bringing a list will help you stay on task and keep you from buying items that you do not really need. This visual list will also allow you to mark off the items that you have bought and keep track of what you still need. Keep your eyes on the prize. Don't let yourself get distracted by all of the other things the stores will try to entice you with. These items will just add up to an extra cost at the end.

3. Remember, less is more. In a small space, it's not always about jamming it full of stuff. Sometimes simplifying your possessions is what actually makes your living space more livable and enjoyable. Nothing looks messier than an over-crowded room. Think carefully before buying expensive items. Do you need a TV or will your roommate bring one? Will there be one available in a common room? Do you really need a gaming system? (Keep in mind that your dorm will not be as safe for your valuables as your home, and it will probably be used by your roommates and guests.) Do you need a stereo, or can you play music on your computer? Limiting expensive purchases can really keep a college budget down.

4. Talk to your roommate ahead of time. Maybe there will be something that your roommate wants to bring and you can focus on something else. Why bring two of the same thing? Maybe your roommate will bring a mini fridge to share and you can bring a microwave. It doesn’t hurt to contact your roommate prior to moving in to coordinate what each person will bring.

5. Go on a scavenger hunt throughout the house. See if you can find things that you can use in your dorm room. You might be surprised at what you can find. Ask permission to use these items if they are not yours. Don’t forget to look in the attic, basement, or garage. Hidden treasures can be found anywhere.

6. Hit garage and yard sales. You can find great deals where you least expect them.

7. Borrow items from family and friends. They probably are not even using them and they will most likely allow you to take them to college.

8. Hit the sales for Back To College. Compare prices online before buying. Buy the items early before the crowds and before selection and supply is minimal. Leaving items to the last minute is not advisable due to the fact that you will probably not be able to find it since other students are shopping for dorm stuff as well. Go to stores like IKEA, Target, Bed Bath and Beyond, The Container Store, Staples, etc. and bring your printable coupons.
