How To Decorate Your Dorm Room and Store Your Stuff

I knew how important it was for MONK to have a nice room while in college. It would be the first time he would be away from home by himself for a long period of time and I wanted him to feel secure and relaxed about his new environment.

What is the first thing you should buy?
#1 Duvet cover or comforter (make sure they are washable). The whole décor depends upon the duvet cover or comforter. You can buy items that coordinate with your color scheme and everything will then go together and look great.

* If you have a roommate, you can contact them. When you are sent Room Assignment Information, contact information for your roommate(s) will be included. This will enable you and your roommate(s) to contact one another before moving in and plan how you will decorate the room together and what each person will bring.

What should you do when you arrive at the dorm room?

1- To maximize style and square footage, rearrange the furniture to find the best layout. Bring a tape measure to take measurements of furniture before you move it to see if it will fit properly.

2- Clean the room and bathroom. You will be surprised at what is left behind, especially if you move furniture around. Scrub the bathroom even though it looks clean.

3- While you are cleaning the room thoroughly, it is a good time to fill out the Suite Condition Report. Every resident must complete a Suite Condition Report (SCR) upon moving into your room/apartment. SCRs are forms used to document the condition of your room/apartment and its furnishings when you take occupancy. If you do not complete the SCR form, you will not be able to contest damage or room condition when you check out of your space at the end of the year. It is your responsibility to take reasonable care (as determined by Residential Life) of your room, furnishings and communal areas. Residents are responsible for damage/loss to their bedroom area or its furnishings, as well as damage/loss in those areas common to the particular room/suite/apartment. Students who violate environmental policies may also be billed in addition to being subject to judicial action.

4- Measure the height of one of the stackable plastic storage drawers. To accommodate the storage containers under your bed, raise or lower your bed to the desired height by inserting hooks into the proper holes on each corner of the bed frame. If bed is not adjustable, use bed risers.

5- Store water bottles for emergency supplies under bed in the back.

6- Put the stackable plastic storage drawers that are already packed (labeled: 1-bathroom, 2-cleaning/laundry supplies, 3-medicine/first aid/emergency supplies) under bed in front of water bottles. (You can also put them in the closet or stack them up and use as a bedside table.)

7- Make the bed. Layer linens, bedding, pillows, etc. to make the room inviting and comfortable.

8- Organize drawers and closet using closet organizers. Unpack the clothes from duffle bag that you will need for that season and put away in closet and dresser. Collapse duffle bag and put on shelf in closet. Store footlocker (already packed with the clothes for winter that you will rotate later into the closet and dresser) on floor of closet or foot of bed or under the bed.

9- Unpack items from the desk/room box and put away.

10- Hook up laptop using the ethernet cord and to WiFi and all other accessories using power strip with surge protector.

11- Provide a softer glow to the overhead fluorescent lighting. Place small desk lamps or task lighting within the room. Plug in lamps and alarm clock using heavy gauge, UL-approved extension cord. (M put his dresser in his closet to allow him extra space in his small private room. By having his dresser in his closet, it did not allow him to place a room light on it.)

12- Decorate walls using a leveler so you will hang items straight on the wall. Be sure to hang items using wall saver removable poster putty or strips and command hooks.

13- Add hanging storage (for coats, towels, etc.) by using over the door hooks on doors.

14- To add color on the floor position an area rug near the bed. This brings an eye-catching focal point and brings warmth into the room. Be sure to leave clearance for door swings and for chairs that are pulled out. Anchor rug down so that people will not trip over it. (M chose to not have an area rug in his room. If he wants one later, it can be added.)

15- To add more color hang drapes using a decorative tension rod or shower tension rod (shower tension rods are much wider in diameter). If you don’t have drapes, suspend fabric with café clips. (M did not want curtains in his room.)

16- Decorate bathroom (if you have one). Hang up shower curtain rod with shower curtain and liner. Put bath mat/rug on floor and hang up towels. Put daily toiletries in medicine cabinet that is over the sink (if you have one). Put waterproof shelf liner in cabinet under sink (to keep cleaning supplies from making a mess in cabinet). Store cleaning supplies in caddy and all other bathroom cleaning items under sink in cabinet. Put toilet brush and toilet plunger in cabinet under sink.

17- Admire your new room and enjoy it!
