Picky Eaters at College
So you have a picky eater and are afraid they will not eat well at the college cafeteria? Well, fear no longer. College cafeteria eating is totally different from when you went to college back in the dark ages (I graduated in 1982 so therefore it is in the dark ages). Gone are the only one entree to pick from and mediocre cuisine. It’s a whole new format that everyone can enjoy!
Some colleges dining is a la carte: you pay for food by the item in dining halls, convenience shops and cafes. Housing students can buy dining plans. Each option has a fixed number of points, meals, and flex bucks (they can extend your dining plan with flexibility to use at various dining locations on campus).
Most college cafeterias have stations where the student can pick from a wide variety of choices. At UMBC they have all you care to eat dining and offers made to order options, entrees and sides, Italian favorites, made to order sandwiches, Kosher offerings, a fresh salad bar and much more.
Stations:
• My Pantry- cereals, donuts, bagels, croissants, omelet bar, make your own milk shake, hot chocolate bar, etc.
• Baker’s Crust Bakery- cookies, brownies, pudding, pies, cakes, danish, scones, muffins, cupcakes, biscuits, ice cream and frozen yogurt bar, etc.
• Baker’s Crust Deli- made to order sandwiches, wraps, subs, hoagies, etc.
• Hearthstone Pizza- various kinds of pizza that is baked in a pizza oven, pastas with sauces, Panini, Stromboli, bread sticks, etc.
• Salad Bar- very large salad bar with all the fixings with homemade soups, macaroni salad, chicken salad, tuna salad, pasta salad, etc.
• The Kitchen- several entrees with sides
• Kosher- serves fresh kosher sandwiches and wraps at lunch time and hot kosher meals at dinner time
My son who is a picky eater always could find numerous things to eat every day. They even have the True Grits online menu with detailed nutritional information or nutrition facts of an item including calories.
