Accommodations in College
Things are quite different in college compared to high school. In high school the school is required to educate the student and accommodations and modifications are automatically submitted for a year that are specified in the IEP. Accommodations and modifications to the school’s curriculum are permitted as well as certain assisted technology is provided for free. Any behavior that interferes with the learning of a student, positive behavior supports are used. The public school will also help students that need help academically and provide special education services if needed.
College does not have to help a student that is failing or having trouble adjusting to the school. A student in college must have a documented disability to receive accommodations that are deemed “reasonable”. Students are ensured “access” to programs and services at college and nothing more. Accommodations in colleges and universities do not necessarily mean that changes will be made to the programs or courses so that the student can succeed. The college can provide an academic accommodation only if that accommodation does not change the outcome of the course or the requirements of the program. Colleges will not automatically put accommodations in place for a student. A student must fill out the proper forms each and every semester and pursue the accommodations they need.
What accommodations/modifications are provided in college?
According to the Disability Support Services (DSS) reasonable accommodations may include extended time on tests, books in alternate format, sign language interpreters, screen readers, voice recognition and other assistive technology. The DSS office will work with the student to set up reasonable accommodations. Students must be aware that an accommodation cannot be provided if it creates a fundamental alteration of the coursework.
What accommodations are not provided?
Accommodations that are of a personal nature or will impact the essential requirements of the individual program of study will not be provided. These include personal care, private tutors and waiving of required coursework. Other examples include: lecture notes from the instructor, study guides, reduced work, etc.
At UMBC, M received the following accommodations from DSS:
• Note Taking Assistance
• Medical Single Room
• Extending Test Time and In An Alternate Location (DSS Office)
• Tutoring (with other students)
