Realizing the College Dream with Autism or Asperger Syndrome by Ann Palmer
Limited preview
Ann Palmer is just a mom and in this book she gives a parent’s perspective about her son who has ASD going to college. How to help your son/daughter be successful in college is crucial as well as preparing the student for the transition and supporting them at college. This complicated undertaking is explained in detail on how to support them through potential problems with social integration, academic pressure, self-disclosure, and appropriate levels of participation in college. Ann provides strategies that were useful for her son in college and how to have a successful, independent life.
Preparing the student for the transition from home life and high school to college is overwhelming not only to the parent, but the ASD individual as well. Any parent that is contemplating sending their child that has ASD to college; this book is extremely helpful in advising how to help their ASD child get to college and how to get the most out of it.
I enjoyed this book immensely; especially all the suggestions Ann exchanged on what they did to help her son progress through the public school system. Her frankness and how she dealt with problems was phenomenal. Her insight will greatly benefit all parents who have a child with ASD in the public school system as well as in college.
This book is a must for any family that is considering college for their ASD child. Everything you need to know about college (deciding whether or not to go to college, choosing a college, adjusting to college, supports and strategies in college, self-awareness and the issue of self-disclosure, positives of the college experience, and the future) is explained fully. Other useful references (books and websites), forms, etc. are in the back of the book. Making the college ordeal a lot more easier for parents to understand and comprehend is a blessing and the book helps relieve the monumental stress that such a responsiblity can evoke.
