Trials & Tribulations (Part 6)

Fall & Spring Session/College (2009 - 2010)

After careful thought and deliberation, I thought others would find this interesting about our battle with Asperger Syndrome. If anyone would like to post about their trials and tribulations, please leave a link so we can read your story. :)

This is written in the third person.

About one week before classes started each semester at junior college M toured the school and became familiar with his surroundings by himself and also went to the book store and bought the books for the classes he was taking. M did not apply for Disability Support Services (DSS) at the junior college because he does not require any accommodations of modifications that are provided from DSS. As soon as the instructors’ emails were released, his parents wanted him to notify his instructors via email with information about his disability and how it affects his learning, but M declined to send this information because he did not feel that it was necessary.

M drove himself to and from school and adjusted well to the junior college. M took a full load of classes during Fall and Spring semester. To stay organized M used an agenda book to record his daily assignments and when they were due. He also did an Excel chart with a list of his grades for each assignment for the term to keep track of his grades and to know whether or not he understood the material and what he needed help with. M has worked hard and has been on the honor roll while attending junior college and will take Calculus during Summer session 2010.

M was encouraged by his parents to join some student groups and organizations to help facilitate camaraderie with fellow students, but M declined. M did though continue to help his father teach 6th grade CCD (M’s third year doing so) at their parish and seems to enjoy it as well. M still has no friends and he plans on doing community service this summer at the local Soup Kitchen.
