Relationship Development Intervention with Children, Adolescents and Adults by Steven E. Gutstein
Limited preview of the book.
This book contains over 150 Social Skills activities that are especially designed for persons with Asperger Syndrome, PDD, Autism and NLD and persons that have relationship development problems such as Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), Tourette Syndrome and Learning Disabilities.
The exercises are based upon their six level, 24 stage Relationship Development Intervention (RDI) program which targets what typical ASD individuals have difficulty with:
Emotional Referencing: The ability to use an emotional feedback system to learn from the subjective experiences of others.
Social Coordination: The ability to observe and continually regulate one's behavior in order to participate in spontaneous relationships involving collaboration and exchange of emotions.
Declarative Language: Using language and non-verbal communication to express curiosity, invite others to interact, share perceptions and feelings and coordinate your actions with others.
Flexible thinking: The ability to rapidly adapt, change strategies and alter plans based upon changing circumstances.
Relational Information Processing: The ability to obtain meaning based upon the larger context. Solving problems that have no "right-and-wrong" solutions. Foresight and
Hindsight: The ability to reflect on past experiences and anticipate potential future scenarios in a productive manner.
In the back of the book there are objectives with a cross reference index of activities to help you plan and evaluate your program by tracking the specific objectives that have been mastered. There is also a topic index if you prefer to work on specific areas rather than following the progression that they have laid out.
The activities provided are written in a step-by-step format including:

Activities that are in the book can be useful for persons from age two onward. The only people who would not benefit from RDI are those who have aggressive, oppositional or non-compliant behaviors.
