It’s Not Just One &*$# Thing After Another

It’s not just one &*$# thing after another is something that you say when bad things keep happening to you which in our case, it is definitely true. This idiom always seems to come to mind when I think about our daily life in Asperger Land. No, Asperger Land is not that simple game Candyland that is played by children and requires no ability to read and only minimal counting skills. Asperger Land is something else entirely and it’s a game parents do not choose to play, but are forced to.

When you have a child with ASD there seems to be an endless supply of problems that crop up: school, sensory issues, OCD, poor social skills, etc. Something always seems to happen when you least expect it and just when you think everything is okay, something else hits the fan with vengeance and you have to deal with that situation ASAP. This crappy phenomenon is a never ending vicious cycle that all parents seem to face day in and day out when they deal with a child with ASD.

When these crappy things happen I usually throw up my hands and say, “why can’t we just have ONE normal day?” but that of course seems to be out of my grasp and I have to deal with any situation that is thrown my way if I want to or not. Even though I’m a stay at home mom and have the time necessary to thwart off any offending problem that is flung in my direction, I do get tired of being Super Mom and desperately need respite. I don’t know why doctors and such always want to put kids with ASD on meds; they should put us moms on meds to help us cope. All I can say is that I need a little helping hand every now and then and I know Hugh Jackman doesn’t make house calls for overwrought mothers who desperately need some pampering. Alas, I must fantasize Hugh giving me foot rubs and whispering sweet nothings into my ear while some other horrendous catastrophe is brewing in the near and distant future that will need my attention real soon.
