10 Things You Don’t Need For Your Dorm Room
Before you start packing, think before you pack. What should you leave home? Check out this list for things you do not need in your dorm room:
1. Stereo- Use an IPod and a computer instead. They don’t take up much room and you can use earphones so there will be no noise to bother others.
2. Expensive Electronics- They will just get stolen or broken. Keep in mind that your dorm will not be as safe for your valuables as your home, and it will probably be used by your roommates and guests. Bring an old TV that is lying around the house that you don’t have to worry about.
3. Weights and Exercise Equipment- They take up valuable space in your room. Hit the college gym for weight machines and indoor swimming pools.
4. Extra Furniture- Since dorm rooms are notoriously small and floor space is minimal, those cool bean bag chairs and deck chairs will take up valuable space in your tiny room.
5. Coffeemaker/Blender/Toaster/Other Small Appliances- Most dorms do not allow them due to being a fire hazard. Usually the campus has a full-service dining hall so there is no reason to take an entire kitchen's worth of small appliances.
6. Knickknacks- Dorm rooms are small, shared spaces. There's simply no room for a ton of extra junk that serves no identifiable purpose. In a small space, it's not always about jamming it full of stuff. Sometimes simplifying your possessions is what actually makes your living space more livable and enjoyable.
7. Printer- Many colleges have printing labs as well as wireless printing systems across campus. A printer not only takes up space, but it can also lead to unnecessary spending on ink and paper and they always seem to break.
8. Candles/Incense/Oil Lamps- Another no-no for dorms because they are a potential fire hazard.
9. Halogen Lamps, Electric Blankets, Electric Heaters, Kerosene Heaters, etc.- Not allowed in dorms as well because of being a fire hazard.
10. Air Guns, Toy Guns, BB/Pellet Guns, Paint Guns or Water Pistols- Not allowed in dorms. Period.
